MILWAUKEE - Friends and family of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Don Brookings are mourning his loss after the longtime sports columnist was spontaneously incinerated by a lightning blast Wednesday afternoon. Brookings' vaporization reportedly occurred only seconds after he filed a column criticizing Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
Brookings' column, according to Journal-Sentinel managing editor George Stanley, addressed Favre's reaction to teammate Javon Walker's possible holdout. Favre had been critical of Walker and Drew Rosenhaus, Walker's agent, prompting Brookings to accuse Favre of breaking an "unwritten rule" that says players shouldn't use the media to air their grievances regarding teammates' contract issues.
Brookings' article, which Stanley says will not run in the Journal-Sentinel, is believed to be the first ever media criticism of Favre, who has won one Super Bowl and three NFL MVP awards over the course of his illustrious 14-year career.
"We're all saddened by the loss of Don Brookings," Stanley said this weekend. "Saddened, and a little confused. We're not sure how Don managed to get struck by lightning on a clear day. While he was indoors. And, getting struck by lightning doesn't usually cause you to vaporize instantly. We think it may have something to do with the Brett Favre article he wrote, which is a shame, because I think there are a lot of people who might actually agree with him that Brett was out of line.
"But not me!" Stanley added hastily. "Not me." |
