HOUSTON - News this week that an agreement in principle to end the National Hockey League lockout that wiped out the 2004-2005 season reminded casual sports fan Chad Spencer of Houston that the 2004-2005 NHL season had been wiped out. "Oh yeah," said Spencer, who follows the NFL and NBA primarily. "I forgot that there wasn't even any hockey this year."
"We're ready to move on," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said of the deal, which preliminary reports indicate will contain a hard salary cap, revenue sharing and changes in free agency. "We're ready to give the sports fans of North America that thrilling hockey action they missed last year. Those who were even aware that we weren't playing, that is."
"Well, I did my part to make sure people didn't forget about the NHL," said Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios. "A couple times a week for the last ten months I've been putting on my hockey gear and just going around and punching random people. Most of them really hate it."
"I used to live in Phoenix, but we moved before the hockey team got there," said Chad Spencer. "Now I'm a Rockets fan, but when they're out of it I still root for the Suns. The Suns had such as awesome year, and the Texans were exciting to watch last fall because they got a little better, and nobody here watches hockey anyway. I hadn't even thought about it at all since I heard that they cancelled the season." |
