BALTIMORE - Orioles slugger Rafael Palmeiro is poised to join one of the most exclusive clubs in all of baseball this week, needing only two hits at press time to join Eddie Murray as only the second player in baseball history that your mom hasn't heard of to collect at least 3,000 hits and 500 home runs over the course of a career. Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, of whom your mom has certainly heard, are the other two members of the exclusive 3,000-500 club.

"3,000 hits and 500 home runs, that sounds like an awful lot," your mom said this week when reached for comment. "Anybody who did that must be a really good player. I don't really follow baseball very closely, but those two other guys -- not Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, but the other two... I can't think of their names right now, but my son was telling me about them the other day -- anyway, I'm sure they're fantastic players too."

"I think it's great that Raffy's going to join me and Willie and Hank in the club," said longtime Oriole Murray, who won a World Series with the team in 1983, "and I think it's even greater that he's going to do it in a Baltimore uniform. And I'd like to add for the record that my mom has heard of me. Although I have to admit, I was talking to her about Palmeiro last week, and she did seem a little bit fuzzy about who he was."

"It's going to be a good thing, getting to 3,000 hits," Palmeiro said Sunday after hitting a home run to bring his career total up to 2,998. "Maybe then at least your mom will hear about it on the news or read about it in the paper, then at least she will have heard of me in passing."
