COLUMBIA, MO - The Chicago Bulls this week clinched their first playoff berth since Michael Jordan led the team to its third straight NBA title -- and sixth overall -- in 1998. Sources close to University of Missouri senior Trevor Bedford, 22, reported that as a result of the Bulls' achievement, Bedford, a front-running asshole who claimed to be a huge Chicago fan during the team's mid-90s dominance but who has shown no interest in the Bulls or the NBA since Jordan retired following the 1997-1998 season, dug out his old Bulls jersey and wore it around this week.
"It's pathetic, if you ask me," said Kyle Stencel, Bedford's classmate at the U of M and at Columbia's Jefferson Junior High School. "He hasn't talked about the Bulls since 8th grade, and now all of a sudden, now that they're back in the playoffs, he's all into them? Please. He didn't even know they were good again until I told him a month ago that they would probably make the playoffs this year."
"It's great to get the team back into the playoffs," said Bulls coach Scott Skiles, whose team clinched their postseason berth with a 110-97 win over the Toronto Raptors. "But let me just say, in no uncertain terms, that if you haven't watched a Bulls game since that last one where Jordan beat the Jazz, you're not allowed to root for us in the playoffs this year. I'm serious. If I find out you're rooting for us, I'll come to your house, and I'll beat you up."
"I don't know what Kyle's talking about," said Bedford, who bought his Bulls jersey -- a #45 Michael Jordan -- during a family trip to Chicago in 1995, the only time he has ever attended a Bulls game. "I've always been a Bulls fan. Just because I haven't watched them in person or on TV or followed them in any way, shape or form in seven years doesn't mean that I stopped rooting for them at all."
"What an ass," Stencel said. "Did you know he was a Pistons fan back in elementary school? Yeah. Had a Pistons jacket, Pistons posters in his room, the whole nine yards. And before that, it was the 49ers. Ass." |
